He was born as AS Dileep Kumar but changed his name to AR Rahman when he was 23. Popularly known as 'The Mozart of Madras', Rahman started his music career with a bang in 'Roja' (1992).
A journey started which made Rahman's name the most admired in the music industry in a very limited time. Through films like 'Bombay', 'Taal' and 'Lagaan', AR Rahman started a process which brought the Indian film music closer to the world music.
'Slumdog Millionaire' changed the entire scenario when AR Rahman established the importance of Indian classical in Hollywood.
Rahman joined forces with Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger on SuperHeavy, a supergroup also featuring Joss Stone, Dave Stewart and Damian Marley. An Honorary Fellow of the Trinity College of Music, Rahman is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, and was named as one of the 'World's Most Influential People' by Time in 2009.
Today is his birthday. We wish him a very happy and prosperous birthday to AR Rahman. Here is a playlist of his best songs.
